In such a busy world, it’s important to have an escape – somewhere you can go to clear your mind and relax from the hustle and bustle of life. While signing up to yoga classes and retreats are excellent for your mental health, your home is always the place you come back to.
That’s why it’s so important to make sure it’s an environment that you love to be in – and one that’s conducive to recuperation and just chilling out. Here are some easy tips to help you create a more peaceful home:
1. Clean your room
For years, our mums have been hounding us to clean our rooms – now we know it’s for a good reason. Studies have actually shown that cluttered, messy rooms make us more stressed. Think about it, how can you possibly unwind with your sock hanging off the fan and the smell of a dirty towel in the corner emanating throughout your room? Keeping your room tidy is a simple way to feel better and gain a sense of ease, especially before bed.
2. Set up a chill out corner
A comfy couch, no technology, some sweet tunes (or a book) and great lighting. Sounds pretty tranquil, right? Setting up a chill out corner might sound like a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be. Make it your own by sprucing it up with some candles, blankets and fairy lights. You can use your little retreat to meditate, read, nap or just to reflect.
3. Bring the outdoors, indoors
Indoor plants don’t just look nice – they are also great for your health! Humans really do benefit by having contact with nature and plants. Research has revealed that stress can be reduced simply by exposure to a greener landscape. Bringing plants indoors also improves air quality by removing compounds such as ozone and turning carbon dioxide into oxygen. Oxygen = life.
4. Make a (controlled) mess
We’re reasonable people. We don’t expect your entire home to be completely spotless at all times – you’re only human! But, there are ways to prevent mess from getting out of control. For example, don’t let bills and letters clutter the kitchen bench. Have a basket or a box for them wherever you stop to read them. Same thing goes for your keys – have a designated spot to pop them and have some hooks handy by the front door to hang jackets and scarves too. Shoe racks can also really neaten up the front of your home.
Another great way to bring more zen into your life is with our online yoga classes. We offer a range of sessions to get you in the zone.
While you can create a sanctuary in your own home, it is important to get out and treat your mind and body too. Find a nice park to stroll along (mask on of course!) and pop in for one of our many classes here at Virgin Active when our clubs reopen.
