Top motivation tips

On the road to physical transformation, there is a chance that motivation might wane as things get tough. To reduce the chance of faltering, there are a few things you can do before you start.
To be successful with any endeavour, you need to start with the absolute, unshakable certainty that you will be successful. It might feel overwhelming at first, so try making the goal smaller, easier, more accessible and get support.
Troubleshoot in advance
Sometimes life happens, and that’s totally okay. That's where a Personal Trainer can come in and help. They are here to help you overcome anything that may try to derail you on your journey. To ensure you’re prepared for when the inevitable may happen.
It’s important to start problem solving these potential challenges before they arise. It might look like something like this:
- Kids get sick and can’t leave the house? Your Trainer can give you a home-based program
- Going away for the long weekend? Get a place with kitchen facilities so you can prepare your own food and be in control of your consumption.
- Pete’s Birthday at a restaurant? Check their menu online beforehand or call up and ask if they can make you what you want.
Measure progress regularly
Body composition change can be frustratingly slow. Often you might not notice the changes you’re making initially. To keep yourself motivated and help track your progress, ensure you are setting some performance or body composition benchmarks that you can test and measure at regular intervals. This will also make it easier for you to identify areas of your workout or nutritional plan that may need adjusting to make sure your progress continues.
If you lose motivation, own it
So you’ve set yourself up for success as best as you can, but now you just don’t feel like eating wholefoods, remaining in a calorie deficit or doing your workouts.
It’s easy to blame your circumstance or challenges for why this is the case. However, you must take responsibility for your actions and choices even if you don’t think it’s your fault. To do otherwise is to minimise your own power and agency, and likely stop you making progress now and in the future. So own it, accept responsibility and connect with a friend or your Coach on how you are feeling to work on a solution together.
Talk to your future self
Imagine yourself in 3, 6 or 12 months’ time from right now. That future version of you will either look and feel exactly as you do right now, or they will be standing in front of a mirror, looking and feeling amazing and experiencing a sense of pride and achievement. The difference is the daily actions that you take.
Every day, do something that moves you in the direction of your goals. If you start finding excuses and avoiding the things you know you need to do, your future self is the one that’s going to be disappointed.
In summary, start with the certainty that you will crush this goal no matter what.
If you can’t say you are 10/10 sure of success, modify until you can. Troubleshoot any problems that may arise in advance. Set some benchmarks and re-assess on a regular basis to stay motivated and on track. If you do stumble, own it. Take responsibility and fix it. Talk to your future self. Tell them that you are committed to making them proud and will do whatever it takes to ensure they can look back with a sense of accomplishment and pride.
