How To Listen To Your Body To Feel Your Best

If you’re feeling tired or not 100%, it could be a sign that you should slow down and prioritise your health.

Luckily, our bodies are pretty good at telling us what we need. Here are some easy ways you can listen to your body and put your health first.

Reach for Foods that Make You Feel Nourished

If you're feeling rundown, chances are your body might not be craving junk food. After all, eating unhealthy foods that are high in refined sugar, saturated fat and trans-fat can make your body feel sluggish - which is the last thing you need when you want to feel your healthiest.

Instead, opt for fresh fruit, nutritious soups, and plenty of vegetables, including garlic and ginger, to give your body the fuel it needs to feel better. 

Stay Hydrated

It’s easy to get dehydrated when you’re busy. You may be sweating, with your kidneys working in overtime to filter waste from the body and balancing electrolytes and blood volume. Which is why it’s critical to keep your water intake up.

Drinking too much coffee – or anything that’s high in caffeine – can have a diuretic effect, meaning your body loses fluids and can become dehydrated quicker. So, if you’re not getting enough of the right fluids, it could affect your body’s ability to fight lethargy or illness. Just be mindful to not go overboard as low sodium levels can be dangerous too. 

In addition to water, here are some great drink options if you’re feeling a bit off:

  • Herbal tea (one that's low in caffeine or caffeine-free)
  • Honey and lemon mixed with hot water
  • Ginger tea
  • Juice. 

Sleep as Much as You Need

Sleep and a well-functioning immune system go hand-in-hand. Give your body the best chance of bouncing back quickly by ensuring you’re getting enough sleep. Aim for at least 7-9 hours of sleep a night, and if you are craving more – do it. Our bodies are amazing at communicating what they need. So if it’s sending signals out that you need sleep, go ahead!

Be Gentle with Yourself

When life is go-go-go, it can be hard to stop and take things down a notch – especially if you’re worried that you’ll lose progress in your fitness regime. But during this time it’s important to be gentle with yourself.

While you should avoid strenuous exercise, gentle stretches or exercise like yoga or going for a walk can make a big difference. Your body may be feeling stiff if you’ve been bedbound, so light movement can do wonders.

Be in tune with what feels good. Your body will tell you whether any light movement feels good or not!
